Artist Statement

For me, creating abstract artwork allows me to emphasize the importance of what we cannot see in everyday reality. Sharing my imagination through visual art is a natural way to express myself to others, as well as evoking a response from the viewer. My goal is not to confuse the viewer or present art that is hard to understand but only to offer artwork that can be appreciated and enjoyed.

For some paintings I use string to lay out a design that I can go forward with, painting the string (usually canvas pieces) into the picture with gesso or my background color. Then I allow the painting to lead me in the direction it needs to go. I use repetitions of color and shape to create movement and balance, creating an imaginative composition of unique design.

Lately I have been working on my color palette.  Color is my favorite aspect of painting, and I hope to gain better control of color balance and uniformity. My paintings are similar in style, yet I find the more diverse my work is, the more pleasing it is for me to create them.

Artist Biography

Elizabeth Crocker has admired art from a very young age. Although her childhood exposure to art was somewhat traumatized by social views on what art should look like, her art teachers were always supportive of her imaginative and colorful drawings, paintings, and collages. From working with clay from her yard as a child to continuing her dream of painting in college, art has always been an important aspect of her life.

She graduated from Tarleton State University, Stephenville, TX in 2005, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art after studying four years under artists Mark Davis and Sharon Seelig. Upon graduation she moved to Fort Collins, CO, with the hope to be inspired by the beauty that was to be found there. Shortly thereafter in 2006 she joined the Artists Association of Northern Colorado (AANC). She took some classes under AANC member Diane Edwards and continues her goal towards becoming a successful artist. On top of the enjoyment from viewing and reading about art, she endeavors to learn and develop her own unique style and make an imprint in the art world.

She has exhibited her artwork in several AANC member shows as well as the prestigious AANC National Juried Art Exhibition and Sale. She received honorable mention in 2006 for her work in the AANC's annual Celebration of Color Juried Art Exhibit and placed second in the Juried Small Works Art exhibit in November 2008. She served as Membership Chariperson for AANC in 2009 and is currently still a member. She also volunteers for the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporay Art and frequents the Denver Art Museum to keep in touch with her artistic thinking.
